A is for applesauce

So let’s talk about Applesauce.

This is Grandma B’s applesauce — well not actually, but it’s applesauce like Grandma B used to make it and it’s one of Rudy’s favourite things in the world. So Sunday I pulled out the apples that had been sitting a bit too long in the fruit bowl (because applesauce is the best thing to do with those apples, yes) and a few that I just bought last week and I made applesauce.

I don’t really have a recipe, so I honestly am not certain it’s exactly how Grandma B used to make it, but the process goes something like this.

Apples — I used six today and that was enough for probably about four bowls this size. You peel them and cut them into cubes.

Water — I put about an inch deep in a saucepan and then put the apples in and bring the water to a boil.

Then I add:

Ground cinnamon — to taste. Seriously, I just dumped cinnamon in until it looked brown and nice

Nutmeg — if you want, but not as much as the cinnamon.

Salt — just the tiniest touch.

Sugar — Somewhere around a half-cup today.

Now, obviously this is not a low sugar recipe, but when you cook it all down, oh, thirty minutes later or so? You have what essentially tastes like apple pie filling without the pie, and it is brilliant. I can understand why Rudy likes it as much as he does.

And I love it cause it tastes like dinners at Grandma’s when applesauce was dessert, and that’s good stuff.
